By the year 2025, car manufacturers have committed to selling 3.8 million fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) in North America. These are vehicles with an electric motor that do not create any emissions except for water vapor, but unlike so-called plug-in electric cars (PEVs), they do not have a battery and do not require long charge times. The electricity is instead generated on-board through a fuel cell that is powered by hydrogen. FCEVs are already offered by many manufacturers, such as Toyota, Honda or Mercedes-Benz.
FCEVs are quiet, accelerator-friendly vehicles that not only do not produce any emissions, but also require less maintenance than conventional gasoline-powered cars. Instead of needing to be charged for hours, they are fueled within minutes with hydrogen, offering a range comparable to conventional cars. However, up to now we were faced with a chicken-or-egg problem: Due to the high costs of building the hydrogen infrastructure there were not many fuel stations around, which means that there were not many cars on the road, which means there was not enough demand that would support additional stations…
Enter HydrogeNXT! We have developed patented technology and processes that let us build a network of stations with the distributed production of hydrogen from biogas using small-scale steam methane reformers. Our leading-edge technology converts methane, a greenhouse gas that significantly contributes to climate change, into hydrogen for FCEVs. In the process we reduce the carbon content of the methane so that drivers not only help the environment when they are driving their cars, but also when they fuel up at a HydrogeNXT station!
Our station design requires less capital investment for the smaller hydrogen volumes initially needed in the transition phase to a hydrogen economy. As the stations are scalable, we will be able to efficiently match fuel capacity with demand as more consumers are driving FCEVs. Distributed hydrogen production also eliminates the need for an extensive hydrogen delivery infrastructure.
As part of our customer offer, we have also developed an app that consumers can download on their smartphones to locate stations and reserve hydrogen fuel for their vehicles. This is our way to ensure that our customers will never run out of fuel and get stranded on the side of the road. We are committed to providing consumers with access to a safe, clean, reliable and affordable source of hydrogen fuel for their vehicles so that they can go without worries wherever their daily lives take them.
